Springer is launching Tropical Plant Biology, a journal which will report on significant advances in all aspects of tropical plant biology as well as applications towards genetic diversity and crop improvement. Tropical Plant Biology joins the growing number of new plant science journals in Springer’s publishing portfolio. The first issue is scheduled for March 2008.

Tropical Plant Biology will cover the most rapidly advancing aspects of tropical plant biology including physiology, evolution, development, cellular and molecular biology, cytology, genetics, genomics, comparative genomics, genomic ecology and molecular breeding. It will publish articles of original research as well as review articles. Occasional special issues focused on a single tropical crop species or breakthrough will also be published. The information in this journal will guide efforts to increase the productivity and quality of tropical plants and preserve the world’s plant diversity.

The editorial board comprises the very best international scientists, and the advisory board will include the heads of leading plant institutes as well as influential researchers in plant biology. The editors-in-chief are Paul H. Moore, recently retired from the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and now affiliated with the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center in Aiea, Hawaii, and Ray Ming of the Department of Plant Biology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois.

Jinnie Kim, Senior Publishing Editor, Plant Sciences at Springer said, “The tropical plants represent not only the basic ingredients of food, clothing, and shelter but the most promising source of energy, industrial biomaterials, and pharmaceutical components for our ever-diminishing natural world. With this exciting new journal, we hope to provide the scientific community with the very best venue to publish the most current and relevant research in tropical plant biology.”

Tropical Plant Biology will be published quarterly online and in print. The journal will include Online First™, Cross Reference Linking, and Alert services. In addition, all Tropical Plant Biology authors, via the Springer Open Choice™ program, will have the option of publishing their articles using the open access publishing model.
