Louisiana Tech students took home first place awards in 11 categories in the 2008 American Society of Civil Engineers Deep South Conference held recently.

The conference, hosted by Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, involves approximately 300 students and faculty from 13 colleges and universities from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Students compete against each other in a variety of events, which include a concrete canoe competition, a steel bridge competition, a professional paper and presentation competition, a surveying competition, and a mystery competition.

Tech’s student teams won first place awards in the following categories: Surveying, Professional Paper Presentation, Concrete Canoe – Aesthetics, Men’s Sprint, Women’s Sprint, Co-ed Sprint, Men’s Endurance, Women’s Endurance, Written Report, Oral Presentation and Overall.

"It only took us two years to conquer the Deep South," said Mitch Guy, a civil engineering senior from Lecompte and captain of the concrete canoe team. "There's no limit to this team's capability."

The concrete canoe team will be competing in ASCE’s National Concrete Canoe Competition June 19-21, 2008 in Montreal, Canada. More information on the competition can be found at http://content.asce.org/conferences/nccc2008/.

"The success of our Civil Engineering students at ASCE’s Deep South Regional Conference is a testament to the quality of the students that we have in the civil engineering program, " said Dr. Luke Lee, an assistant professor of civil engineering and ASCE’s faculty adviser. "The students, led by Mitch Guy, were responsible for the entire (concrete canoe) project, which involved fundraising, design, construction and testing of the basic materials and the final product. Their success at these conferences is just one indication that our students can compete with anyone."
