Los Angeles, London, New Delhi and Singapore (May 14, 2008) – SAGE have today launched the first ever student guide for the Masters-Level PGCE. Edited by Keira Sewell, Doing your PGCE at M-Level sets out practical advice, case studies and activities that will help students get to grips with what studying at Masters-level entails, and how the qualification supports them as a developing professional.

Between 2005 and 2007, the standard qualification for those entering the teaching profession in the UK were re-classified, with initial teacher training courses now offering a choice of routes to qualification, leading to either a postgraduate or a professional award.

With no other guidance for students available, Sewell’s book is a much-needed resource for students at both Primary and Secondary level trying to find the right route for their study.

“PGCE at M level has added another dimension to the alternatives on offer, commented Sewell, adding, “Choosing which route is right for a student is a personal and often difficult decision. This book sets out to dispel some misconceptions about M-level study, such as that there is a greater amount of work involved, or that there is little long term benefit towards effective practice in the classroom: neither of these perceptions are true”.

The M-Level qualification is based on the premise that the developing professional requires an understanding of research, theory and practice in order to be effective throughout their career. Sewell therefore sets out detailed activities and guidance on learning to read research; how to formulate a research question; and academic writing.

Most importantly, the book offers support for students who want to make the transition from the M-Level PGCE to completing a full Masters, and how to ensure that the work they do enables them to get the job they want.
