Alexandria, Va. – Dr. James Steele, Professor of Oral Health Services Research at Newcastle University, England, is being presented with the 2008 International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Geriatric Oral Research Award at the 86th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR in Toronto, ON, Canada on July 2, 2008.
Dr. Steele is a clinical scientist who has been involved in the evolving area of Geriatric Oral Research since the start of his research career in 1990. His Ph.D. laid the groundwork for a program of study that has broadened the understanding of the impacts of oral health on disease and well-being in the elderly.
Dr. Steele's work with the United Kingdom (UK) National Diet and Nutrition Survey for people aged 65 years and older was seminal to the understanding of the relationships between oral health and nutrition. He has collaborated widely in Europe, North and South America, and Australia during his research. Dr. Steele has also worked tirelessly in the UK, Europe, and within the IADR, as an advocate for the oral health issues of the elderly. He was a key contributor to the recently published strategic review of oral health needs for the elderly in the UK.
The Geriatric Oral Research Award consists of a cash prize and plaque and is generously supported by Sunstar Americas, Inc. The award is designed to stimulate, encourage, and recognize outstanding research accomplishments in the field of geriatric oral research, is one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, and is one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
