International Association for Dental Research presents awards and fellowships

Grant and Award Announcement

International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research

Toronto, ON, Canada – As part of the Opening Ceremonies of its 86th General Session & Exhibition, convening today at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) will present numerous prestigious awards and fellowships. Details follow:

  • IADR Honorary Membership

    The three most recent living IADR Past Presidents may select an Honorary Member who has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental research. This year, Honorary Membership is bestowed on Dr. Cyril B. Frank, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Calgary. From 2000 to 2006, Dr. Frank served as the inaugural Scientific Director of the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis - one of 13 institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the primary home for dental research. Under his leadership, oral health research in Canada has flourished. Total financial support for dental research has doubled from 2000 to 2005, and several new oral health research training programs have been initiated.

  • IADR Distinguished Service Award

    The IADR Board of Directors established this prestigious award to recognize a member who has not served as an IADR Officer, but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. This year's winner is Olav Alvares from the American Division. Dr. Alvares is being honored for his work as Editor of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology & Medicine for its entire independent existence. This is the 11th year that the award, sponsored by J. Morita USA, had been presented.

  • IADR/AADR William J. Gies Awards

    These awards, for the best papers published in the Journal of Dental Research, are presented in three categories: Biological, Biomaterials & Bioengineering, and Clinical. The award is named for William J. Gies, the founder of the Journal of Dental Research. Nominations may be made by any person, and the papers to be chosen must describe work which has very significantly advanced knowledge in some aspect of dental research. Papers eligible for consideration are those published during the 12-month period (July-June) immediately preceding the IADR General Session. The award consists of a cash prize of $1,000 and a plaque. The Gies Award is open to anyone who publishes in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the IADR/AADR. The awards are sponsored by J. Morita USA.

    The award in the Biological Research category is presented to C.W. Gibson, Z.A. Yuan, Y. Li, B. Daly, C. Suggs, M.A. Aragon, F. Alawi, A.B. Kulkarni, and J.T. Wright for "Transgenic Mice that Express Normal and Mutated Amelogenins" (J Dent Res 86:331- 335, 2007).

    The award in the Biomaterials & Bioengineering Research category is presented to M.R.O. Carrilho, S. Geraldeli, F. Tay, M.F. de Goes, R.M. Carvalho, L. Tjäderhane, A.F. Reis, J. Hebling, A. Mazzoni, L. Breschi, and D. Pashley for "In vivo Preservation of the Hybrid Layer by Chlorhexidine" (J Dent Res 86: 529-533, 2007).

    The award in the Clinical Research category is presented to G.K. Essick, C. Phillips, and J. Zuniga for "Effect of Facial Sensory Re-training on Sensory Thresholds" (J Dent Res 86: 571-575, 2007).

  • IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research "Cover of the Year, 2007"

    This recognition is presented annually for the previous year's JDR cover image that enhances the impact of the article, and is both scientifically novel and aesthetically pleasing. The "Cover of the Year, 2007" award is presented to: J.F.Schindler, J.B. Monahan, and W.G. Smith, for "p38 Pathway Kinases as Anti-inflammatory Drug Targets" [J Dent Res 86(9):800-811, September, 2007]. This is the third year of the award.

  • IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award

    Presented to Michael Lennon (Cheshire, England), this award recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention using fluoride in different formats. This is the 17th year of the E.W. Borrow Memorial Award, which consists of a plaque and a cash prize of $2,000.

  • IADR David B. Scott Fellowship

    Presented to Quan Xing (Wuhan University, representing the Chinese Division), this Fellowship is supported by the proceeds of an endowment created by the late Mrs. Nancy M. Scott in honor of her husband, David B. Scott, a Past President of the IADR. The Fellowship consists of a cash prize of $2500.

  • IADR John J. Clarkson Fellowship

    Presented to Olalekan Ayo-Yusuf (University of Pretoria, South Africa), this bi-annual Fellowship is funded out of donations from individual IADR members and the IADR Institutional Section in honor of John Clarkson, past Executive Director of the IADR. The Fellowship is awarded to a worthy recipient who is conducting research in public dental health. The

  • IADR/Lion Dental Research Award for Junior Investigators

    This award, generously sponsored by the Lion Corporation, is intended to support improvements in oral health sciences through the stimulation of junior investigators by: (1) recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and (2) recognition of applied research achievements for the improvement and development of oral care products for the prevention of oral diseases. The cash prize is $2,000 each, and the 2008 awardwinners are: (representing the Oral Health Research Group) Olalekan Ayo-Yusef (University of Pretoria, South Africa), (representing the Periodontal Research Group) Julio Carrion (Stony Brook University, New York, USA), and (representing the Salivary Research Group) Omer Deutsch (The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel) and Emanuele Cotroneo (King's College London, UK).

  • IADR Norton M. Ross Fellowship

    Presented to Adam Henry Dowling (Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland), the Fellowship is given in memory of the late Norton M. Ross. This bi-annual Fellowship, in the amount of $2,800, rotates through the IADR Divisions and is awarded to an individual in the Irish Division this year.

  • IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Awards

    These travel awards were established, and generously sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive, to support students and young investigators doing research in the area of oral disease prevention. The award is given this year to six individuals, with a cash prize of $2,000 each. This year's recipients are: Jason Armfield (University of Adelaide, Australia), Juliane Guimarães de Carvalho (University of São Paulo, Brazil), Jayampath Seneviratne (The University of Hong Kong), Thomas Corne Postma (University of Pretoria, South Africa), Paul Seok-Mo Heo (State University of New York at Buffalo, USA), and Jennifer Crowe (Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, USA).

  • IADR/Unilever Division Travel Awards

    These awards were established to encourage outstanding young dental scientists to carry out research, attend the annual IADR General Session, and compete in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition. The Travel Awards are generously sponsored by Unilever.   • IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition

    The IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition is designed to provide an opportunity for the best junior investigators from all IADR Divisions to present their research at the annual IADR General Session. Of these international competitors, up to six may receive cash prizes (first place award of $1,600 and $800 for second place) and trophy awards in the junior and senior categories. Winners will be announced on site and publicized at www.iadr.org after the meeting.

  • AADR Bloc Travel Grant

    The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) received a Bloc Travel Grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) to support travel for U.S. dental students and NIDCR-supported trainees to present their research at the IADR General Session in Toronto, ON, Canada. This year, the AADR was able to award grants to 50 individuals in the amount of $1,000 each:
