The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) will honor David I. Gottlieb as The John von Neumann Lecturer on Tuesday, July 8 at the SIAM Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. Gottlieb is the Ford Foundation Professor and Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. He is being recognized for his work on spectral and high-order accurate numerical methods for partial differential equations and the applications of these methods to significant problems in science and engineering, including computational fluid dynamics, weather forecasting, and computational electromagnetism. Gottlieb is also being recognized for his central role in building a community of researchers in contemporary methods for partial differential equations.
The John von Neumann Lecture is awarded annually for outstanding and distinguished contributions to the field of applied mathematical sciences and for the effective communication of these ideas to the community. Gottlieb will receive a monetary award and certificate, and will present a survey lecture entitled, "The Effect of Local Features on Global Expansions."
Established in 1959, The John von Neumann Lecture surveys and evaluates a significant and useful contribution to mathematics and its applications. It may by awarded to a mathematician or scientist in another field, but, in either case, the recipient should be one who has made distinguished contributions to pure and/or applied mathematics. The selection committee for the 2008 award include Cleve Moler, The MathWorks, Inc. (Chair); Martin Golubitsky, Ohio State University; David Keyes, Colombia University; Irene Fonseca, Carnegie Mellon University; and Charles Peskin, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
The prize is named for John von Neumann in recognition of his pioneering work in numerical analysis as well as his work as an architect and promoter of the fields of computer science and scientific computing. The John von Neumann Lecture fund was established with contributions from IBM Corporation and other organizations and has been augmented by SIAM.
