Jan E. Stets and Jonathan H. Turner are the winners of the "Outstanding Recent Contribution Award" 2008 for their "Handbook of the Sociology of Emotions". This important annual prize is presented by the Sociology of Emotions Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA). It is given to the outstanding book published in the preceding three years that advances the sociology of emotions. The editors will receive the award in August at the annual ASA meeting in Boston, MA.

The "Handbook of the Sociology of Emotions" was published in August 2006 by Springer. It gives an updated overview of the theory and research that have proliferated in the analysis of human emotions since the 1970s. In four sections the editors summarize the basic processes underlying emotions such as its neurological underpinnings, review the sociological theories on emotion, go over specific emotions such as love, jealousy, envy, and anger, and the final section shows how the study of emotions adds new insight into other subfields of sociology: the workplace, health, and social movements.

Jan E. Stets and Jonathan H. Turner are both Professors of Sociology at the University of California in Riverside (UCR).They are key figures in the sociology of emotions who have carried this scientific field to its current level of prominence. Stets' recent research focuses on developing the moral self including moral emotions in sociology. Turner is known primarily as a general theorist, although he has a number of more substantive specialities, including the sociology of emotions, ethnic relations, social institutions, social stratification, and biosociology.
