Each year, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) awards SIAM Outstanding Paper Prizes to the authors of exceptional papers published in SIAM journals. Papers are selected for their originality, and they should bring a fresh look at an existing field or open up new areas of applied mathematics. Winning papers have been published during the three years prior to the year of the award.

Each recipient received a monetary award during the 2008 SIAM Annual Meeting, July 7-11, in San Diego, California. Recipients also receive funds toward travel expenses and gratis registration for the meeting. Members of the 2008 selection committee were Robert Pego, Carnegie Mellon University (Chair); Jorge Nocedal, Northwestern University; and Eva Tardos, Cornell University. Each committee member is an editor-in-chief of or is active on the editorial boards of SIAM journals.
