Amsterdam, September 18, 2008 – Elsevier is pleased to announce that eight of its professional and scholarly books were honored at the annual BMA Medical Book Competition ceremony in London on September 9th 2008. An additional 19 Elsevier books were highly commended and five received commendation. In total, 640 books were entered to the BMA's competition with 130 prizes awarded with 23 first prizes, 63 highly commended prizes and 44 commended prizes. Author Richard Dawkins, Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford, presented the awards.

Elsevier's Netter's Essential Histology by William Ovalle and Patrick Nahirney won the BMA Illustrated Book Award. A new book, it presents a stunning visual overview of normal histology and will provide an important resource for medical students. Professor Ovalle noted that "In this age of information overload, curricular revision, and reduction in hours devoted to the basic sciences in medical schools around the world, the book's format and content are based on an idea whose time has come, and we are delighted that it has been recognized with this prestigious award."

Elsevier's McMinn's Clinical Atlas of Human Anatomy 6th edition by Peter Abrahams, Johannes Boon, and Jonathan Spratt with photographs by Ralph Hutchings captured first prize in the BMA Basic and Clinical Sciences Book category. This world-renowned Atlas was extensively updated in this new edition in line with modern teaching, including a DVD of clinical correlations and 1000 clinical photographs that help students make the connection from the classroom to clinical practice. Professor Peter Abrahams stated, "We are thrilled to be recognized by fellow medics but the honor is even more important as a permanent memorial to Professor Hanno Boon, one of the authors, who was murdered during the preparation of this book."

"Congratulations and warmest thanks to all of the authors, editors and Elsevier publishing staff who worked on these prize-winning titles!," remarked Linda Belfus, Senior Vice President, Global Medicine. "This is an amazing achievement and reflects our dedication to developing and delivering quality content across the healthcare spectrum."
