Event: Carnegie Mellon University's Deborah A. Lange will receive a $900,000 check from Donald S. Welsh, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region III — which includes Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia — for continued research and education in the economic use of brownfields. Brownfields are abandoned, dormant and underused industrial or commercial properties. The money, slated for allocation over the next five years, will be used by the Western Pennsylvania Brownfields Center at Carnegie Mellon to encourage communities and small businesses to enhance the cleanup and development of brownfields. The research component of the EPA grant also will fund development of a new interactive tool for the assessment of carbon footprints, conventional air emissions and energy impacts from brownfield development.
