Nancy W. Coppola, PhD, a professor in the department of humanities at NJIT, will be named one of 25 associate Fellows for the Society for Technical Communication. The ceremony will take place this coming May. Coppola, of Mountain Lakes, directs the master's degree program for science in professional and technical communication. The program advances the theory and practice of technical communication across all user abilities and all media.
The Society has 14,000 members who produce everything from traditional user manuals to the latest Web-based interactive tutorials, all with the goal of conveying complex information in a way people can receive, understand, and use.
Fellow is the highest rank that the Society will confer. The bylaws require that the individual be approved by the board of directors based on having attained eminence in the field of technical communication through achievements and contributions to the profession and Society. "The accomplishments by this year's class of Fellows reflect a breadth of achievement that has benefitted the Society and our profession enormously," Society president Mark Clifford explained. "I look forward to awarding them this distinction at the Technical Communication Summit in May in Atlanta."
Fellows must first serve as Associate Fellows for at least two years and continue their measurable contributions to the field, conduct original work that advances technical communication or make significant contributions to the Society at multiple levels. Candidates are evaluated against criteria in six categories and must show exceptional overall combined excellence in these categories.
