LAUREL, MD - AIUM president-elect Harvey Nisenbaum, MD, will present the William J. Fry Memorial Lecture Award to Alfred Kurtz, MD, on April 3 at the 2009 AIUM Annual Convention in New York, New York. The award was established in 1969 to honor an AIUM member that has significantly contributed to the scientific progress of diagnostic medical ultrasound in their particular field.
Alred Kurtz, MD, currently serves as a professor of radiology at Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, written more than 65 chapters and nonrefereed articles, and authored 5 books. Ultrasound: The Requisites, now in its second edition, coauthored with William Middleton, MD, and Barbara Hertzberg, MD, is considered a standard in its field.
Dr Kurtz has served the AIUM in more than 20 positions, including president from 2001 to 2003. He received his medical degree from Stanford University in 1972.In addition, he has made wide-reaching contributions to ultrasound education. He chaired the Education Committee of the American College of Radiology (ACR) from 1987 to 1993 and did the primary work on the ACR Learning Teaching File for Ultrasound, later transposed onto laser disc and CD-ROM. As director of medical student education for the Department of Radiology at Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, he organized the Introductory Radiology Clerkship and created the Jefferson Medical College intra-Web learning site for this course.
Dr Kurtz has been involved in 8 grants, including one as principal investigator of a multicenter study on the diagnosis and staging of ovarian cancer, awarded by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The recipient of the AIUM William J. Fry Memorial Lecture award is invited to deliver a lecture during the Plenary Session of the Annual Convention. Dr Kurtz's presentation is titled "Ultrasound: Past and Present. What Is Its Future?"
The award's namesake, William J. Fry, was a physicist with a strong interest in ultrasound in medicine. His innovative research efforts advanced the field of diagnostic ultrasound.
