TECNALIA Technological Corporation and the Aragon-based company, TELNET-RI, have developed the GPON-Doctor by tecnalia, an innovative product that enables locating, analysing and evaluating the GPON Network "with just a click".

Network infrastructures continue to be constantly evolving in order to widen and enhance the provision of broadband services. Of all the options, the one with the greatest profile is GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network), an optic fibre network that provides a greater broadband alternative to the current xDSL and cable solutions. GPON is the preferred technology in North America, Latin America, Europe, India and Singapore. In North America, operators had begun installing BPON systems, but now have started to change to GPON. EPON – also known as GEPON – is highly successful in Japan. In China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea both technologies are being used. GPON is being put forward as one of the alternatives that make the FTTx concept a reality. FTTx encompasses the family of applications for the fibre-subscriber loop, such as FTTH (Fibre To The Home), FTTB (Fibre To The Building) and FTTC (Fibre To The Curb).

The GPON networks are ones with totally passive fibres, with power splitters, couplings and attenuators and which, unlike other fibre options, enable transport of services for up to 64 users simultaneously. It has an OLT (Optical Line Terminal) located at the operator's premises and the ONU (Optical Networking Units) in the premises of the subscribers to FTTH. The OLT has a number of GPON line ports, each carrying up to 64 ONTs.

Its principal features are the capacity of oversubscription (providing subscribers with more traffic when needed and the network with idle capacity), the multiplexing of upstream traffic using protocols based on TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), the optical diffusion of downstream traffic (where each ONT will be capable of processing only the traffic corresponding to the AES security techniques), and the control of ONUs by OLT employing the OMCI protocol, these being the keys to its success and also those characteristics which need greater attention on implementation. Thanks to tools such as GPON analysers, operators can verify that there are no discrepancies between the various manufacturers of ONUs and OLTs, as well as verify their correct behaviour within the PON.

GPON-Doctor by tecnalia is part of the programme of innovation and patent rights and copyright programme by TECNALIA-Telecom. This programme provides the business community with the results of the research applied to the Unit, accelerating and enhancing the capacity of the enterprises themselves to exploit new market products and solutions on the market.

The presentation of GPON-Doctor by tecnalia to society at large took place in the SITI/asLAN 2009 Trade Fair, was hold at the Madrid Fair on 31 March and 1 and 2 April. This Technological Forum is aimed at ITC professionals (engineers, distributors, operators, etc.) interested in finding out about the latest trends in the sphere of networks and the financial gains generated by their use and implementation: Unified Communications, Telepresence, Virtualisation, Webbed Networks, WiFi 802.11n, Managed Security, etc.
