LOS ANGELES (July 8, 2009) – Carole Wagner Vallianos, Esq., president and CEO of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), will be inaugurated as the president of the American Judicature Society at its Annual Meeting in Chicago on July 30.
Founded in 1913, the American Judicature Society is an independent, national, nonpartisan organization of judges, lawyers and other members of the public who seek to improve the justice system. The society, which brings a public perspective to justice system issues, has the mission to secure and promote an independent and qualified judiciary and a fair system of justice.
Wagner Vallianos will take over the post from the current president, Gordon L. Doerfer of Boston, MA. Doerfer, who served 25 years on the trial and appellate courts of Massachusetts, is a mediator and arbitrator on the panel of neutrals at JAMS – The Resolution Experts.
"I am honored and excited to have this opportunity to serve as president of the American Judicature Society, an organization dedicated to improving and promoting a fair system of justice," said Wagner Vallianos. "I look forward to working with my colleagues in a collaborative and coordinated effort to strengthen the American Judicature Society and the judiciary."
Wagner Vallianos became president and CEO of LA BioMed in September 2008, after serving six years on the institute's board of directors, including two years as the board's chair. She had also served as the board's treasurer and chair of the board's finance committee.
She is a principal in the Law Offices of Carole Wagner Vallianos, a Manhattan Beach firm where she practices civil rights, nonprofit corporation law and estate planning. She was reappointed to the California Judicial Council's Standing Committee on Access and Fairness in the Courts and is a past member of the Jury Improvement Task Force and the Council's Advisory Committees on Race and Ethics Bias in the Courts and Private Judging.
Wagner Vallianos also is a Fellow of the California First Amendment Coalition and a former advisory board member of the Citizen Access Project, University of Florida's Brechner Center for Freedom of Information.
In addition, she is a member of Women Lawyers of Los Angeles, the South Bay Bar Association and the Benjamin Aranda III Inn of Court. She is past president of the League of Women Voters of California, and she was on the Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of the United States and the Board of Trustees of the League of Women Voters Education Fund.
She has served as an NGO/nonprofit consultant with the U.S. Department of State in Bosnia, Turkey, Cyprus and India. She is a graduate of Coro, a public policy training program, and is a member of Pacific Council on International Policy. Wagner Vallianos received her B.A. from California State University, Fullerton, and her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law.
