Each year, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) awards SIAM Student Paper Prizes to the most outstanding papers submitted to the SIAM Student Paper Prize Competition.

SIAM is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 SIAM Student Paper Prizes.

Awad H. Al-Mohy
The University of Manchester, UK
A New Scaling and Squaring Algorithm for the Matrix Exponential
Currently in production for publication in SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications
Co-Author: Nicholas J. Higham, The University of Manchester, UK

Jie Chen
University of Minnesota
On the Tensor SVD and the Optimal Low Rank Orthogonal Approximation of Tensors
Published in the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 30, Issue 4 (2009)
Co-Author: Yousef Saad, University of Minnesota

Shun Zhang
Purdue University
Recovery-Based Error Estimator for Interface Problems: Conforming Linear Elements
Published in the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 47, Issue 3 (2009)
Co-Author: Zhiqiang Cai, Purdue University

The winners will present their papers during the SIAM Annual Meeting in Denver Colorado, July 6-10, receiving funds for travel expenses and gratis registration. Each recipient will also receive a framed certificate and a monetary award.

The SIAM Student Paper Prize is based solely on the merit and content of the students' contribution to the submitted paper and recognizes outstanding scholarship by students in applied mathematics and computational science who do not yet hold their Ph.D. at the application date. Papers entered into the competition must have already been submitted for publication prior to submission into the competition. All three of this year's winning papers have been accepted for publication in SIAM journals.

Members of the selection committee for the 2009 SIAM Student Paper Prize include Kelly Black, Clarkson University; John Geddes, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering; and Reza Malek-Madani, United States Naval Academy (USNA).
