LOS ANGELES (Oct. 26, 2009) – Rajnish Mehrotra, MD, a principal investigator at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), will receive one of India's highest honors, the "Hind Rattan Award," which the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Welfare Society of India presents annually for "outstanding services, achievements and contributions" by Indian citizens living outside the country.

The NRI Welfare Society will present the honor to Dr. Mehrotra at the 29th International Congress of NRIs meeting in India on Jan. 25, 2010, the eve of India's Republic Day.

"Congratulations to Dr. Mehrotra for this international recognition of the significant contributions he has made to the advancement of science at LA BioMed and to the treatment of his patients," said David I. Meyer, LA BioMed President and CEO. "We are proud of his many accomplishments and pleased to see others recognize them."

Dr. Mehrotra specializes in kidney disease and has published or co-authored more than 90 articles and book chapters. His research interests include vascular calcification in patients with renal diseases, adherence of dialysis patients to therapy, determinants of selection of dialysis modality and outcome studies in peritoneal dialysis. His research support includes, among others, grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.

He chairs the Dialysis Advisory Group of the American Society of Nephrology and is an Associate Editor of NephSAP, the Deputy Editor for the journal Hemodialysis International and serves as a member of the editorial board of Peritoneal Dialysis International, Kidney International and Clinical Journal of American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Mehrotra has been admitted to Alpha Omega Alpha, an honorary medical society, and was awarded the John Maher Award by the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis in 2006.

In addition to his work at LA BioMed, he is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and is Associate Chief and Director for Peritoneal Dialysis at the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
