LOS ANGELES (Oct. 13, 2009) - Roger J. Lewis, MD, PhD, a principal investigator at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), has received one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine with his recent election to the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Dr. Lewis is among 65 new members and five foreign associates elected at the Institute of Medicine's 39th annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the IOM said it recognizes individuals who have "demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service."

"It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and accomplished individuals to the Institute of Medicine," said IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg. "Each of these new members stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine and who has served as a model for others. The Institute of Medicine is greatly enriched by the addition of our newly elected colleagues."

In addition to his work at LA BioMed, Dr. Lewis is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

He also is a member of the editorial board for the journal Annals of Emergency Medicine and has reviewed for Annals of Internal Medicine, Biometrics, Circulation, Communications in Statistics, Clinical Trials and JAMA. Dr. Lewis serves as a research mentor for numerous fellows and junior faculty and frequently lectures on the topics of clinical research design and the statistical analysis of clinical trials.

Dr. Lewis has served as a grant reviewer for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and foundations and as an external reviewer for the IOM. He is a past president of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). Dr. Lewis has authored or co-authored more than 150 original research publications, reviews, editorials and chapters. He has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous research projects funded by a variety of federal, state, foundation and commercial sources.

He was elected to the IOM by current active members who use "a highly selective process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health," according to the IOM.
