European project based on ICT to facilitate users creating applications for their city or home

ESI-Tecnalia is taking part in the European DIY Smart Experiences (DiYSE) project, based on ICTs and focused on transforming the everyday life of people through the control of their environment, both in their own homes and outside. In total 40 international organisations are participating in the project, amongst which are Philips, Thales and Alcatel-Lucent, as well as various European universities and research institutes. DiYSE has a budget of almost 25 million euros and seven countries are taking part in it.

The basis of the DiYSE project is the combination of objects present in spaces in which the person is and where Internet services are, and with the conjunction of both sets of data, enable users to carry out their own, personalised applications depending on their needs at the moment and no matter which technical skills they have. In this way, all their surroundings can be adapted, creating personalised experiences to be shared with others.

Through these applications and using electronic devices such as the mobile telephone or touch screens, different scenarios of interaction will be created. Thus, a possible scenario could be a closed environment such as a cafeteria. When a user enters this café, he or she may use the physical devices available in this space (sensors for temperature, noise), as well as web services (cafeteria menu application) to create his or her own personalised application. In this way, a possible application to be created could recommend, on the one hand, what is the best area of the cafeteria to eat (based on the combination of information on temperature and noise) and, on the other, which is the most suitable menu for that user (taking into account personal needs) and recommending for example a menu for celiacs.

The project is basically aimed at researching aspects of device connectivity, ubiquity, service infraestructures and multimodal interaction, and so the forecast results for the project will be relevant for contributing substantially to the Internet of the future development, apart from achieving a series of socioeconomic advantages which would mean a significant advance in the Information Society.
