Elsevier congratulates its British Medical Association award-winning medical authors and editors

London, 23 September, 2010 – Elsevier is pleased to announce that two of its medical titles won first prize in their respective categories at the annual BMA Medical Book Competition ceremony in London on the 14th September 2010. An additional 22 Elsevier books were highly commended. The Awards were presented by Professor Averil Mansfield, Immediate Past President BMA and Chairman of the BMA Board of Science.

The winning medical titles from Elsevier are:

  • Color Atlas of Clinical Hematology, 4th edition by A. Victor Hoffbrand, John E. Pettit, and Paresh Vyas won first prize in the BMA Internal Medicine category. This book is regarded as one of the best hematology atlases on the market. Purchasers of the text are also given access to the online content, which includes a vast image bank of 2,700 images, with 2,100 in full color. Professor Hoffbrand said of the award, "The award recognises the tremendous effort of all three Authors in assembling such a vast collection of high quality images and the expertise of the Publishers in presenting them so magnificently. We hope the book will make an important contribution to the teaching of hematology to undergraduates and postgraduates worldwide."

  • Kumar & Clark's Clinical Medicine, 7th edition by Parveen Kumar and Michael Clark won first prize in the BMA Medicine category. This text is a thoroughly updated, reworked and revised new edition of the first-prize winner in the Medicine category of 2006. In the words of the BMA nomination, this book is the market-leading comprehensive and authoritative single-volume textbook of internal medicine. It remains the gold-standard guide. Professor Kumar noted, "We are delighted that the 7th edition has won the first prize in Medicine. It is a great honor to know that so many students and doctors regard it as the 'gold standard' in many parts of the world."
