OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 8, 2010 -- UT-Battelle has contributed more than $1 million to the United Way campaign for the third consecutive year.

UT-Battelle United Way Campaign Chairman Kathy Carney said about $900,000 was contributed by employees, and UT-Battelle contributed a corporate gift of $100,000.

Approximately $35,000 was raised from special events, including the International Festival, along with book and jewelry sales.

Carney credited a strong volunteer spirit among employees as the reason for another million-dollar-plus campaign.

"I had an opportunity to see what the ORNL staff has in terms of volunteerism," Carney said. "There were more than 150 volunteers who pulled together to make this campaign come off the way it did. I had the privilege of working with each person to make this campaign a success."

ORNL Director Thom Mason praised the volunteer spirit, as well.

"I very much appreciate and commend ORNL's employees and retirees, who continue to be among the region's leading United Way contributors," Mason said. "Their generosity is an important part of UT-Battelle's efforts to be a good corporate citizen."

United Way volunteers from UT-Battelle also visited several United Way-supported agencies in East Tennessee during the summer prior to the official start of the campaign.

University of Tennessee Men's Athletic Director Mike Hamilton and Bob Kesling – the Voice of the Vols – helped start the UT-Battelle effort on a strong note when they spoke at a rousing kickoff event attended by several hundred employees.
