OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 29, 2010 -- Luiz Leal and Lance Snead from the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have been elected to the American Nuclear Society's Class of 2010 Fellows.

The awards, presented by the ANS executive director at the society's winter meeting, are in recognition of the fellows' significant contributions and achievements to nuclear science and technology.

Leal, a member of ORNL's Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division, was recognized for research that has significantly improved neutronics analyses for both reactor and fuel cycle safety applications.

An ORNL staff member since 1993, Leal holds a doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Tennessee. He and his wife, Tuca, have one daughter, Lais. The Leals reside in Knoxville.

Snead, a member of ORNL's Materials Science and Technology Division, was honored "for being the leading international expert on radiation effects in silicon carbide and other ceramic composites for fusion and advanced fission reactors."
