OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria to receive honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa

Secretary-General of the OECD Angel Gurria will receive the University of Haifa's highest accolade, the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, at a gala event in Haifa, Israel, later this month.

Mr. Gurria will be visiting Israel and will be escorted by Israel Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz at the University of Haifa ceremony, where he will receive the honorary doctorate.

As Secretary-General of the OECD, Mr. Gurria has made great strides in advancing the growth and authority of the organization, including a key role in ensuring Israel's OECD membership earlier this year.

Mr. Gurria is receiving the tribute in recognition of his inspiring and impressive leadership as Secretary-General of the OECD; for his efforts in promoting economic cooperation through minimization of trade restrictions, reducing economic inequality, combating poverty, and investing in human capital through better education and health services; for his unwavering commitment to multicultural dialogue and mutual respect amongst all people; and for his friendship and longstanding support of the State of Israel.

"We believe the honorary doctorate degree is a fitting accolade for Mr. Gurria's exemplary roles as Mexico's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance and Public Credit, his chairmanship of the International Task Force on 'Financing Water for All' and his unwavering commitment to multicultural dialogue and mutual respect amongst all people," said University President Prof. Aaron Ben-Ze'ev.

The Honorary Doctorate ceremony for Mr. Angel Gurria will take place at the University of Haifa, Israel, on November 22, 2010.
