BOSTON, Mass. (March 14, 2011) —Through the generosity of Mr. Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor, Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group, the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR) is pleased to announce The Khalaf Al Habtoor Harvard Research Fellowship, which will offer a qualified post-doctoral researcher from the UAE or the Middle East region the opportunity to work for up to three years at a research center or laboratory based at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health or one of the Harvard Medical School affiliated hospitals.

The DHFMR currently supports post-doctoral Research Fellowship recipients from the GCC and Middle East region. DHFMR Research Fellowships are intended to give recipients the flexibility to explore fundamental scientific questions that will lead to better understanding of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Their research relates to population groups within the Middle East region, and contributes significant knowledge to their host laboratory at Harvard.

DHFMR will issue a Request for Applications for the Habtoor Fellowship by March 31, 2011. DHFMR's Scientific Advisory Committee, whose members are leaders of the Harvard Medical School and Middle East academic research community, will review all applications. The Request for Applications' criteria and schedule for submission will be posted on DHFMR's website www.dhfmr.hms.harvard.edu. Acting on the advice of the Scientific Advisory Committee, the DHFMR Board of Trustees, chaired by the dean of Harvard Medical School, approves the recommendations and notifies all successful award recipients.

"With Mr. Khalaf Al Habtoor's generous support, DHFMR can advance its mission to recognize talented young investigators from the Middle East region," said Jeffrey Flier, MD, dean of the Harvard Medical School faculty and DHFMR president. "We are delighted to have this opportunity to identify and support the next generation of researchers in the Middle East."

"It is an honor to support the work of Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research," said Mr. Khalaf Al Habtoor, "and the Research Fellowship will have a significant impact on the recipient's career. Their experience and expertise will greatly benefit our country and our region."
