The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME),The Lancet, Harvard School of Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the University of Queensland School of Population Health are hosting a conference to advance the field of health metrics and evaluation. The conference—Global Health Metrics and Evaluation: Controversies, Innovation, Accountability—takes place at the Westin, Seattle, WA, USA, March 14-16.

As part of this conference, The Lancet is publishing Online over 100 abstracts from all corners of the world, measuring things as diverse as outcomes of a cancer programme in the low-income setting of Madagascar, rural mortality in Vietnam, determinants of maternal mortality declines, and estimates of the burden of non-fatal injuries in South Africa. Few regions or topics are left unexplored.

Professor Christopher Murray, of IHME at the University of Washington, is one of the organizers and speakers at the Global Health Metrics and Evaluation (GHME) conference. Professor Murray says: "Now more than ever, those engaged in measuring health and evaluating impact to improve health need to come together to share knowledge. The quality and the breadth of the abstracts we received are an encouraging sign about the advances being made in this field."

The topics with the largest number of Abstracts submitted included non-communicable diseases, malaria, priority setting, and health inequalities.

Professor Murray concludes: "We expect the conference will provide an opportunity not only to discuss specific topics, general trends in data-collection platforms, new methods, and analytical approaches, but also to reflect on opportunities for more integrated or synergistic approaches to health metrics and evaluation."
