The eighth student edition of The Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures has just been launched, with an exciting new format that organises 15 key chapters into four key stages of patient care. It also includes new content on areas such as risk management and preparing patients for diagnostic investigations.
Written and edited by nurses from the world-renowned UK centre of excellence, the Manual provides additional headings to make the text even more accessible and this edition includes many more colour photos and diagrams.
It used by students all over the world to ensure their practice is evidence-based and effective.
Although it has been written primarily for UK students, it is also popular in countries like Canada and Australia, which have similar healthcare systems. The Manual also provides a valuable introduction to clinical procedures for overseas nurses coming to work in the UK, from countries such as India, Poland, Romania, Australia and the Philippines.
The latest student edition, which provides essential clinical updates since the seventh edition was published in 2008, is once again edited by two renowned nursing experts, Lisa Dougherty, Nurse Consultant in Intravenous Therapy at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and Sara Lister, Assistant Chief Nurse and Head of The Royal Marsden School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation.
"More than 80 highly experienced nurses have contributed to this invaluable reference source, which provides nursing students with the underlying theory and evidence they need to deliver clinically effective patient-focused care" say the Editors. "We believe this will provide them with the confidence they need to become safe, informed and skilled practitioners."

The format of the new manual is based around the four stages of the patient's hospital experience:

- Supporting the patient with human functioning: communication; elimination; moving and positioning; nutrition, fluid balance and blood transfusion; patient comfort and respiratory care.
- Supporting the patient through the diagnostic process: interpreting diagnostic tests and observations.
- Supporting the patient through treatment: medicines management; perioperative care and wound management.

About the Editors: Dr Lisa Dougherty, Nurse Consultant Intravenous Therapy at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, has worked in IV therapy since 1986. She has written many articles and chapters and has edited eight books, including the last three editions of The Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures. She received an OBE in 2007 for services to nursing and the NHS. Sara Lister, Assistant Chief Nurse/ Head of School, has been working with Lisa on the last two editions. She joined The Royal Marsden in 2000, where she is responsible for practice and professional development as well as leading the School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation.
