Grant and Award Announcement

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Professor Irena Lasiecka of the University of Virginia is the 2011 recipient of the W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize, which is awarded annually by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) for outstanding work in, or other contributions to, the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory. Established by SIAM in 1993, the prize is awarded either for a single notable achievement or a collection of such achievements.

Dr. Lasiecka is being recognized for her fundamental contributions in control and optimization theory, specifically for work in dynamical systems governed by partial differential equations and their applications.

She delivered the prize lecture, Analysis and Control of Coupled PDE Systems Arising in Fluid - Structure and Gas Flow - Structure Interactions, on Wednesday, July 27, at the SIAM Conference on Control and Its Applications (CT11), held July 25-27, 2011 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Lasiecka received a cash award of $10,000 and an engraved medal as part of the award, and was recognized at the CAIMS/Mprime/SIAM Awards Lunch on Thursday, July 21, at the 7th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2011) held last week in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Having received her Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Warsaw in 1975, Dr. Lasiecka currently holds the position of Commonwealth Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia. Her main research interest is in the general area of control theory for systems governed by partial differential equations. She is an IEEE Fellow and serves on the International Advisory Board of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Dr. Lasiecka is the first woman recipient of this award.
