Jerusalem, July 19, 2011 -- The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) have signed a cooperation agreement for the development of joint research projects in all areas of scientific knowledge.

The FAPESP is an independent public foundation with the mission of fostering research and scientific and technological development in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. This is carried out through the support of research projects in higher education and research institutions in all fields of knowledge.

The new agreement, the first by FAPESP with an Israeli institution, anticipates funding, in the first stage, of five proposals, each with a total combined cost to both institutions of about $100,000. The duration of each research project would be up to two years.

Applications for funding of proposals will be accepted by the two cooperating institutions from researchers in both the state of Sao Paulo and Israel. The review process and selection of the proposals will be carried out by ad hoc committees especially appointed by the FAPESP's scientific director and the Hebrew University vice-president for research and development.
