Elsevier's Academic Press congratulates its editors and authors on the publication of the 500th volume of the highly-acclaimed Methods in Enzymology series.

Methods in Enzymology (MIE) is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. The series began in 1955 with original editors Sidney Colowick and Nathan Kaplan describing the methods for the assay and purification of enzymes in Volume 1 -5. The end result was extremely successful, and the editors stayed on to guide what then became the MIE series. The concept was to produce a collection of volumes, edited and written by experts in the field that would contain "methods" or "recipes" of useful and clearly explained steps that would allow fellow researchers to conduct experiments in their own labs using tried and true techniques.

In 1987, John Abelson and Mel Simon took over as editors, and have helped expand the series in scope - publishing methods volumes on subjects as diverse as immunology, genetics, cell biology, microbiology and stem cells, with each volume being guest-edited and contributed to by the top researchers in the field. In 1990, Volume 182, the Guide to Protein Purification, published and went on to be the "go to" resource in the lab. In September 2010, a completely revised edition of this classic volume published under the editorial guidance of Richard Burgess and original editor Murray Deutcher. The 500th volume, Methods in Systems Biology, edited by Daniel Jameson, Malkhey Verhma, and Hans Westerhoff, covers many of the tools and techniques used in systems biology research – one the most exciting and promising areas of biological research that can only become more prolific over time.

To keep up with current trends, the entire collection of MIE is now available online via Elsevier's platform SciVerse ScienceDirect. The online volumes provide the comprehensive and reliable MIE content that researchers need along with the accessibility and searchability those researchers want, but cannot get from using printed works alone. A new tool has also been developed to help explore the trusted content in MIE. Methods Navigator is an online solution that equips scientists with a new structure for discovery, enabling them to search, access, and apply the right Method for their work, saving time and producing the desired outcome to support their research.
