Hackensack, N.J. – (March 13, 2012) – James C. Wittig, M.D., Chief Orthopedic Oncology and Co-Chief, Skin and Sarcoma at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the nation's top 50 best hospitals for cancer, joined leading experts to co-author the only step by step guide of all operative procedures in orthopedic oncology titled "Operative Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgical Oncology."

"We developed this book to provide orthopedic surgeons and other healthcare professionals a comprehensive guide on the surgical treatment for bone and soft tissue sarcomas," said Dr. Wittig. "The book includes an emphasis on limb sparing surgery, utilizing complex surgical techniques and the treatment of benign bone tumors and metastatic bone cancer."

Dr. Wittig co-authored Operative Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgical Oncology with leading experts Martin M. Malawer, M.D. Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Georgetown University School of Medicine and Jacob Bickels, M.D. of Tel Aviv University. The book provides full-color illustrations and intraoperative photographs focusing on the mastery of operative techniques. The text provides a thorough understanding of how to select the best procedures, avoid complications and recognize expected outcomes. Accompanying the book is a companion website with fully searchable text and procedural videos.

"Our surgical team train physicians across the tri-state area in many cutting-edge surgical techniques, including limb-sparing surgery, robotic surgery, and video-assisted thoracic surgery," said Andrew L. Pecora, M.D., F.A.C.P., C.P.E., Chief Innovations Officer, Professor and Vice President of Cancer Services and Co-Chief of Skin and Sarcoma at the John Theurer Cancer Center. "Dr. Wittig's guide to surgical orthopedic oncology is another example of our commitment to education and training for healthcare professionals."

The book is primarily written for orthopedic surgical oncologists and sarcoma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic surgery residents as well as oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and other healthcare workers. The user-friendly format is ideal for a quick preoperative review of the steps to a procedure. Each procedure is broken down step by step, with full-color intraoperative photographs and drawings that demonstrate how to perform each technique. Extensive use of bulleted points and tables allows for quick and easy reference.

Each clinical problem is discussed in the same format: definition, anatomy, physical exams, pathogenesis, natural history, physical findings, imaging and diagnostic studies, differential diagnosis, non-operative management, surgical management, pearls and pitfalls, postoperative care, outcomes, and complications.

Operative Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgical Oncology is published by Wolters Kluwer Lippincott Williams and Wilkins and available to purchase on Amazon.com.
