University of Arizona professor Marwan Krunz of the UA department of electrical and computer engineering has been recognized this year by the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Communications, or TCCC, for his outstanding service.
Krunz's consistent high-quality service to the communications society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers -- including leadership of technical conferences and sustained editorial role for the technical journals that are central to the committee's mission -- has earned him the 2012 TCCC Outstanding Service Award. The TCCC focuses on computer networking and communication issues for the IEEE.
Krunz's outstanding service award will be presented at the 2012 IEEE Computer Communications Workshop, Nov. 7-9, 2012 in Sedona, Ariz.
The award honors Krunz's sustained excellent service to the committee, said Martin Reisslein, professor at the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. "Marwan has served in leadership positions of highly prestigious conferences and journals that are at the core of TCCC's mission," he said, including past leadership of the technical program of IEEE's Infocom conference where Krunz coordinated reviews and selection decisions for more than 1,400 technical submissions. He also served on the editorial boards of highly important TCCC journals over the last several years, Reisslein said, including boards that publish works on computer networking, mobile computing and communications. These journals include the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, and the IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management.
In 2010, Krunz was named an IEEE fellow, the highest grade of membership possible in the institute, for his contributions to resource management policies in wireless networks. And in 2012 Krunz co-chaired the international ACM Conference on Security and Privacy in Wireless and Mobile Networks 2012, or WiSec 2012, along with UA ECE assistant professor Loukas Lazos. This annual conference of wireless security technology leaders was held at the University of Arizona campus in Tucson.
Krunz holds a joint appointment of the same rank in the UA department of computer science, and he is the UA site director of Connection One, a joint research center between the UA, industry and the state that focuses on radio frequency and wireless communication systems and networks. Connection One was established under the National Science Foundation's Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers, or I/UCRC, program.
"I am humbled to receive such an award," Krunz said of the honor. "It is gratifying to be recognized by your colleagues and your technical community."
The 2012 TCCC Outstanding Service Award Committee members are Reisslein, Mostafa Ammar of the Georgia Tech School of Computer Science, Roch Guerin of the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Ariel Orda of the Technion Department of Electrical Engineering.
