LOS ANGELES (Dec. 13, 2012) – The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), recognized as a leader in groundbreaking medical advancements and for bringing laboratory discoveries from the bench to the bedside, recently received accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP). LA BioMed was one of five entities whose accreditation was approved at the meeting of AAHRPP's Council on Accreditation in December.

"We are pleased to have been recognized for our outstanding program in the protection of human research subjects," said David I. Meyer, Ph.D., President and CEO at LA BioMed. "Excellence in that area puts us in the position to carry out clinical research and trials of new drugs and devices with the utmost attention to protecting research subjects, while at the same time promoting cutting edge innovations."

This year, LA BioMed celebrates 60 years of achievements in turning innovative science into breakthrough medicine for patients in need. The Institute's clinician-scientists have successfully developed treatments and therapies to treat conditions that affect individuals in the local community and abroad, including antibiotic-resistant infectious diseases, cancer, HIV/AIDS transmission, mental health, heart disease, diabetes, pulmonary hypertension, improper nutrition, and many other life-threatening conditions. LA BioMed has also made tremendous progress with its master plan to consolidate its facilities into a modern 11-acre research park that will bring leading scientists and physicians together to lead in breakthrough medical discoveries.

For the past decade, AAHRPP has granted accreditations to research programs and organizations that conduct biomedical, behavioral, or social sciences research involving human participants, and that meet the highest standards for research quality, ethics, and protection of research participants. AAHRPP is dedicated to protecting as many participants as possible, while ensuring that the world reaps the benefits of research.
