Atam P. Dhawan, of Randolph, a distinguished professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBA) for contributions in medical imaging. Dhawan, who also serves as the Executive Director of Undergraduate Research and Innovation at NJIT, will be inducted into the College of Fellows at the National Academy of Sciences during the AIMBE annual event, March 23-25, 2014 in Washington, DC.
Membership as a Fellow is a result of important contributions to biomedical engineering. Dhawan's nomination was peer reviewed by the College of Fellows Selection Committee, submitted for election, and approved by the votes of the entire College of Fellows.
Dhawan is best known among engineering peers as the inventor of the Nevoscope, which is widely used by physicians to scan skin lesions and detect skin cancer. He currently is developing a multi-spectral optical and near-infrared tissue imaging technology to measure and monitor glucose levels in the blood non-invasively without painful pricking to get a drop of blood as required by conventional glucose monitors.
He is the founder of the Interdisciplinary Design Studio, which provides students enrolled in NJIT's Albert Dorman Honors College students with an opportunity to develop ideas with wide-ranging economic and societal impact. In the course of the four-year program, students develop virtual companies with complete business and financial plans that are critiqued by instructors and mentors who include internationally known faculty, prominent industry experts, and successful entrepreneurs from the private sector.
Dhawan is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi and Eta Kappa Nu honor societies and is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Engineering, and Who's Who Among America's Teachers.
