New Rochelle, NY, February 20, 2014—Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers announces the launch of a new, peer-reviewed journal, Brain and Gut. This new journal will publish leading-edge research dedicated to exploring a whole systems approach to health and disease from the intimate relationship between the brain and the digestive systems.

Classically, medical journals have been dedicated to publishing research focused on specific body systems. Brain and Gut breaks with this tradition and recognizes that understanding how the seemingly disparate nervous system and digestive system interrelate offers up a powerful resource for understanding health and diseases.

The editorial team will be led by David Perlmutter, MD, a board-certified neurologist and fellow of the American College of Nutrition who will serve as Editor-in-Chief. Assistant Editors will include Aristo Vojdani, PhD, Director of Immunosciences Lab, Inc., Los Angeles, CA, and Gerard E. Mullin, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Perlmutter and Dr. Mullin will both be featured speakers at the 2014 Integrative Healthcare Symposium taking place now in New York City.

"I am delighted to welcome David Perlmutter to our team of extraordinary editors. Brain and Gut will provide a unique and provocative forum for the intersection of neurology, gastroenterology and immunology," says Mary Ann Liebert, president and CEO of Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

Brain and Gut is dedicated to exploring a vast array of physical interrelationships, including those between the gut bacteria, the microbiome, and various processes. These relationships underlie human disease, including inflammation, immunity, neurotransmitter production, and the clinical manifestations of disturbances of these processes. Such disturbances include inflammatory disorders throughout the body, digestive disorders, cognitive issues, mood disturbances, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.

Brain and Gut topics will include:

  • The interaction of the central and enteric nervous systems (ENS) and their communication with the immune system
  • The etiopathogenesis, impact, and treatment protocols for gut dysbiosis
  • How the gut's "little brain" (the ENS) controls intestinal immunity
  • The effect of environmental triggers on brain function and on GI immune development and function
  • Food immune reactivities and additives, including dyes, and their role in neurological and neurobehavioral disorders
  • Central nervous dysfunction in functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs)
  • The roles of neuroinflammation, gastrointestinal inflammation, and immunoinflammation in metabolic disorders
  • The reconstitution of microbiota (e.g., prebiotics, probiotics, elimination diet, fecal transplant) as a tool for the prevention and treatment of GI, neurological, and immune system disorders

Brain and Gut will explore relevant laboratory and clinically important research, with supportive review articles, original articles, and case studies offering clinicians an in-depth understanding of various clinical situations whereby implementing documented interventional strategies to help many patients suffering from brain, gut, and body dysfunctions.
