Boulder, Colorado, USA - Geoscientists across the western U.S. will meet in Bozeman, Montana, USA, on 19-21 May to discuss new science, expand on existing science, and explore the unique geologic features of the region. The meeting's keynote talk, "Mars Exploration (Curiosity Rover Mission)," will be delivered by John Grotzinger of Caltech. Three special sessions honoring geology masters Arthur Snoke, Don Winston, and Kenneth Pierce form the core of this meeting. Other topics include education, paleontology, and minerals mining.
The meeting will be hosted by Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman. Located in the Gallatin Valley of southwest Montana (Montana's fly fishing epicenter) Bozeman is just 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. The beautiful setting, coupled with an engaging scientific program, promises to make this an excellent meeting.
John Grotzinger will deliver his keynote talk at the Museum of the Rockies on Tues., 20 May, from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a reception. The Museum of the Rockies, adjacent to the MSU campus, is home to one of the largest and most important dinosaur collections in the world.
Two "Snoke Sessions," honoring the work of Univ. of Wyoming professor Arthur W. Snoke, run all day on Mon., 19 May. Titled "The Eclectic Tectonic Legacy of Arthur W. Snoke -- Metamorphic Core Complexes at Age 35," the morning session is associated with Field Trip 7 (Thurs., 22 May), which will take participants into the Cordilleran hinterland to visit the Bitterroot and Anaconda metamorphic core complexes of Western Montana.
"Precambrian II: Meso- and Neoproterozoic Evolution of Western Laurentia I: In Honor of Don Winston" will take place Tues. and Wed., 20-21 May. Winston is emeritus professor at the University of Montana. This series of talks and posters is associated with Field Trip 8 (Thurs., 22 May), which will explore the southern margin of the Belt Basin of western Montana and northern Idaho.
Kenneth L. Pierce of the U.S. Geological Survey's Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center will be honored for the breadth of his research on Yellowstone National Park. This session is associated with Field Trip 11 (Thurs., 22 May), which focuses on Paradise Valley and the northern part of Yellowstone.
The meeting is augmented by a nine-chapter field guide, Exploring the Northern Rocky Mountains, edited by Colin A. Shaw of Montana State University and Basil Tikoff of the University of Wisconsin. The northern Rocky Mountains encompass an array of tectonic provinces representing tectonic and magmatic events spanning more than three billion years of Earth's history. This guide presents a diverse collection of trips highlighting the rich geology of the region, from the Precambrian, through the Sevier/Laramide orogeny, to the Quaternary history of Yellowstone. This volume is an essential update to the classic field-oriented literature of the northern Rocky Mountain Region of Montana and Idaho, and will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of researchers, educators, and students interested in the dynamic geology of the northern Rockies.
