MAYWOOD, Ill. (DATE) - Loyola University Medical Center psychiatrist Murali Rao, MD, has achieved Distinguished Life Fellow status in the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor the profession can bestow.
Dr. Rao's status will be formally recognized May 18 during the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting in Toronto.
Dr. Rao also has been elected a member of the American College of Psychiatrists. He will be inducted Feb. 20 during the annual meeting of the college in Huntington Beach, Ca.
Dr. Rao is chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. Dr. Rao specializes in geriatric psychiatry, affective disorders, dual-diagnosis psychiatric illnesses, psychosomatic medicine and transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of depression. Dr. Rao is much interested in the emerging neuromodulation techniques and adapting proven modalities into clinical practice. In addition to being a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Rao is a Fellow of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.
Dr. Rao earned his medical degree from Mysore Medical College and completed residencies in psychiatry at Southern Illinois University Affiliated Hospital and Winnebago Mental Health Institute.
Dr. Rao is fluent in Hindi and Kannada. His interests include tennis, travel and family.
