Experts from around the world in the field of particle beam radiation therapy will gather in San Diego May 18 through May 23 for the 54th annual Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) Conference, hosted by Scripps Proton Therapy Center; University of California, San Diego; and University of Maryland.
Based in Switzerland, PTCOG is a nonprofit organization for those interested in all aspects of particle beam radiation therapy for cancer care, including proton, light ion and heavy charged particle radiotherapy. Its members come from more than 50 organizations located in more than 15 countries.

This year's conference is expected to attract more than 1,000 physicians, researchers, physicists, engineers, nurses, administrators and others involved in particle beam therapy. The conference theme will be "The Modern Era of Particle Beam Therapy: Widening the Therapeutic Window for Better Patient Outcomes." Presentations and discussions will focus on the latest technological advances and clinical applications in particle beam therapy for cancer patients.
Updates on clinical trials
The conference's educational session will be held May 18 through May 20 and will provide a comprehensive overview of the clinical, physical, technological and radiobiological fundamentals of particle beam therapy. The conference's scientific meeting will take place May 21 through May 23, including updates on completed and ongoing clinical trials, the use of 3-D imaging in daily treatment and clinical applications for cancers of the breast, lung, head and neck and gastrointestinal tract. The scientific meeting will also explore topics such as management of tumor motion during therapy, combined modality treatment approaches, and multi-institutional collaborative research efforts.
Tour of Scripps Proton Therapy Center
The 2015 PTCOG Conference will feature more than 50 abstract presentations and hundreds of scientific posters, plenary talks, workshops, an extensive exhibition hall, receptions and networking opportunities among colleagues. Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the Scripps Proton Therapy Center, which opened in 2014 and is the only facility in the United States to treat patients exclusively with the latest advancement in proton technology, pencil-beam scanning.

Scripps Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education (CME) credits for physicians. PTCOG will apply for additional continuing education credits for attending medical physicists, nurses and medical dosimetrists.
