Today marks the launch of a new service available to authors who are publishing their work in CSP's NRC Research Press journals. This service provides interested authors with automatic free deposit of accepted manuscripts into TSpace, a free and secure research repository established by the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL).
On February 27, the Canadian funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) announced a new Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications that requires federally funded peer-reviewed journal publications be made freely available. The policy states that grant recipients can comply by depositing their accepted manuscript in an online open access repository or by publishing their work in an open access journal. This partnership provides researchers with a simple means to meet these funding agency requirements.
"It's all about choice," says Cameron Macdonald, Executive Director, CSP. "Depositing the accepted manuscript in an openly accessible digital repository offers authors the freedom to publish their research in the journal of their choosing, which often means there is little or no cost to publishing, and ensures the broad international reach that an established and reputable journal offers.
"We are very pleased," he says, "to present our authors with a simple and free (and automated) option to deposit their work in the University of Toronto Libraries' TSpace, a world-class repository."
University of Toronto Professor Emeritus William J. Samarin, who is working with UTL staff to archive his life's work in TSpace, spoke about the value of making the scholarly record broadly available through the repository, "It's another way to republish material for a whole new audience and in a way that makes things accessible. As I have been preparing my work for deposit in TSpace, I have found things that could be of interest to all kinds of people and that's exciting. It's exciting to me to participate in this way."
The option to deposit accepted manuscripts in TSpace is now available to interested authors, as part of the manuscript submission process.
