What is the next leap forward in energy storage?

Solid-state batteries afford a number of remarkable advantages compared to conventional lithium ion cells, and due to recent advancements in the field, they may be poised to bring a major step forward in energy storage.

Many of the potential advantages are well known, such as the marked improvement in safety by eliminating flammable solvents used in conventional lithium ion cells. The challenges are also well known, particularly for fabricating a very thin but robust solid electrolyte. But the use of a cell with an all-solid-state design also allows for alternative high energy electrodes such as lithium metal anodes and high voltage cathodes that are not compatible with conventional lithium-ion cell components. Furthermore, using all solid-state materials may open up the design space to novel cell architectures and manufacturing techniques.

This exciting opportunity can allow for entirely new designs, such as highly integrated electrodes for high power performance, or the design of batteries as multi-functional (e.g. energy storage and structural support) devices. These advancements are not limited to lithium cell chemistries, but also include other metal cations or halides as the predominant charge carrier.

Editors Nancy J. Dudney, William C. West, and Jagjit Nanda have brought together a highly diverse and accomplished group of expert theorists and experimentalists in the field of solid-state batteries. These 51 authors across a wide range of disciplines contributed 22 chapters encompassing three main aspects of the field: Enabling Technologies and Fundamental of Solid State Systems, Novel Solid Electrolyte Systems and Interfaces, and Devices and Three Dimensional Architectures.

This comprehensive handbook entitled "Handbook of Solid-state Batteries" covers a wide range of topics related to solid-state batteries, including advanced enabling characterization techniques, fundamentals of solid-state systems, novel solid electrolyte systems, interfaces, cell-level studies, and three-dimensional architectures. It is directed at physicists, chemists, materials scientists, electrochemists, electrical engineers, battery technologists, and evaluators of present and future generations of power sources.

This handbook serves as a reference text providing state-of-the-art reviews on solid-state battery technologies, as well as providing insights into likely future developments in the field. It is extensively annotated with comprehensive references useful to the student and practitioners in the field.
