Future Medicinal Chemistry, a leading MEDLINE-indexed journal, published by Future Science Group, has released a special focus issue highlighting the latest breakthroughs at the intersection of medicinal chemistry and chemical biology.

Recent decades have witnessed the application of an increasingly holistic approach to drug discovery and research. At the forefront of this movement towards a more multidisciplinary research model is chemical biology. Guest Editor of the special issue, Ali Tavassoli (University of Southampton, UK) explains: "The goals of chemical biology have remained the same since its inception over 20 years ago, but the field has expanded beyond its historic definition of the perturbation of biological systems with molecular tools, and now encompasses various sub-disciplines that each push the boundaries of traditional discipline-based research and attest the breadth of chemical biology."

This special issue features an eclectic mix of content, spanning the probing and manipulation of biological systems to chemical genetics and tissue regeneration. Highlights in the issue are a series of timely and excellently received reviews, including 'Protein-Protein Interactions as drug targets' by Christian Ottmann et al. (Lead Discovery Center GmbH, Germany) and 'Successful strategies in the discovery of small-molecule epigenetic modulators with anti-cancer potential' by Elisabeth D Martinez et al. (University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, USA). Also featured in the issue are opinion pieces from leading members of the field and primary research papers reporting on the latest cutting-edge research.

Tavassoli commented: "This special issue highlights the key areas and challenges at the interface of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry and helps demonstrate the breadth and diversity of research that is driving this exciting field forward. I hope you enjoy reading this issue."

Future Medicinal Chemistry provides monthly commentary and debate on the rapidly evolving field of medicinal chemistry. The MEDLINE-indexed journal showcases milestones in pharmaceutical R&D and features expert analysis of emerging research - from the identification of targets, through to the discovery, design, synthesis and evaluation of bioactive agents.
