(WASHINGTON, March 24, 2016) - The American Society of Hematology (ASH) will launch an open-access journal to complement Blood, its flagship publication and the most-cited journal in hematology. Blood Advances™ will offer a unique focus on scholarly and educational content that complements and expands on topics beyond the scope addressed in Blood. An online platform that provides opportunities for increased communication between authors and readers will be a hallmark of ASH's new publication.

Following an international search, Robert S. Negrin, MD, professor of medicine at Stanford University and associate editor of Blood, has been named founding editor-in-chief.

"It is an honor to oversee the launch of Blood Advances, the first expansion of the trusted brand of Blood, which continues to be the premier journal in hematology," said Dr. Negrin. "Blood Advances will allow ASH to more completely address the needs of our members by disseminating scholarly information on an expanded array of topics that are not comprehensively served by any other journal. Our innovative online platform will serve as an incubator to test novel methods of communication and interaction with our community."

By accepting manuscripts deemed to be either novel or definitive, Blood Advances will publish important studies believed to be of great interest to the ASH membership. Furthermore, the online platform of Blood Advances will facilitate active interaction between readers and authors, and utilize advancements in video and graphics, including visual abstracts and enhanced commentary.

Blood Advances will announce a call for papers during the summer of 2016, and the first issue will launch at the 58th ASH Annual Meeting in San Diego, December 3-6, 2016.

"After 70 years of excellence in Blood, the intersection of technological innovation and rapid scientific discovery in hematology makes now the perfect time for ASH to introduce this new journal," said 2016 ASH President, Charles S. Abrams, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania. "Blood Advances will complement ASH's outstanding portfolio of high-caliber scientific and clinical publications and set a new standard in electronic publishing."
