Is the "China threat" perception real? What is the impact of this perception on the international and regional order? What are the challenges that China faces in providing reassurances to its neighbours and the international community? How does China respond and handle these challenges?

The concept of China's national interest was only explicitly discussed in mainstream foreign policy analysis since the 1980s. In the recent decade, however, China perceives itself as a major power and enthusiastically pursues its international status and influence. As the second largest economy in the world, it has been engaging in ambitious programmes of cultivating its hard and soft power.

Chinese foreign policy, like those of other major powers, concentrates on a set of significant bilateral relationships. China's Foreign Policy: Challenges and Prospects intends to illustrate how the Chinese foreign policy programme has been actually operating based on the Chinese leaders' evolving world view, as well as to consider its practical impact on the international and regional order. The analyses of how China manages its various challenges, ranging from energy security, military capabilities, to regional security crises, provide further insight into a China that has accepted and adapted to existing international forms.

The book is the result of consolidated analyses from the author's decades of research and writings on China's foreign policy. For those interested in the expanding field of Chinese foreign policy, it is a publication not to be missed.
