Jeffrey P. Kahn, PhD, MPH, the Andreas C. Dracopoulos Director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), an independent, peer-elected organization advising the nation on medical and health issues.
New members of the NAM are elected by current active members in recognition of a commitment to service and distinguished contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health. Formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, the NAM was established in 1970 and has 1,947 active members, including those elected in 2016.
Prof. Kahn is also currently Chair of NAM's Board on Health Sciences Policy, which oversees and guides its work related to biomedical and clinical research. He previously served as Chair of consensus studies on The Use of Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research (2011) and the Ethical, Social, and Policy Considerations of Mitochondrial Replacement Techniques (2016).
Prof. Kahn's publications include Contemporary Issues in Bioethics and Beyond Consent: Seeking Justice in Research, as well as over 125 scholarly and research articles. He is also an elected Fellow of The Hastings Center and was the founding president of the Association of Bioethics Program Directors, an office he held from 2006-2010.
Prof. Kahn joined Johns Hopkins University in 2011 as the inaugural Levi Professor of Bioethics and Public Policy, a faculty member of the Berman Institute and Professor in the Dept. of Health Policy and Management in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. On July 1, 2016 Prof. Kahn became the second Dracopoulos Director of the Berman Institute.
