The 2017 International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Olof Johnell Science Award was presented to Professor Olivier Bruyère at a ceremony held today at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases in Florence, Italy. The Award recognizes extraordinary and internationally recognized contributions to the field of osteoporosis in a scientific or policy implementation area. It is named in honour of the late Professor Olof Johnell, a Swedish orthopaedic surgeon who made major contributions to the field of osteoporosis and to the work of IOF.
The Award was presented to Professor Bruyère by the Chair of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, Professor Cyrus Cooper, who stated: "I am pleased to extend this prestigious award to Professor Olivier Bruyère on behalf of IOF. Presented in recognition of his extensive body of work across a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal research, this Award also pays special tribute to Professor Bruyère's achievements in the fields of epidemiology and public health and to his commitment to education and teaching. He has pioneered an important initiative of the Foundation through his novel course on research methods."
Olivier Bruyère is Professor of Clinical Epidemiology in the Department of Public Health, Epidemiology and Health Economics, Professor of Geriatrics Rehabilitation in the Department of Motricity Sciences, and Head, Support Unit, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at the University of Liège, Belgium. His areas of interest include epidemiology, public health, health economics, pharmacoepidemiology, physiotherapy, sport and rehabilitation, quality of life, geriatrics, nutrition, economic evaluation of the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and frailty.
Prof. Bruyère has published more than 200 scientific papers and is, among other positions, the Editor-in-Chief of 'Archives of Public Health', Associate Editor of 'BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders', Expert at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and at the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES), Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Society on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO), General Secretary of the Belgian Bone Club (BBC), Member of IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, and President of the Belgian Ageing Muscle Society. He has received several internationally recognized awards, including the 2016 IOF-ESCEO Pierre Meunier Young Science Award.
