Meet at the intersection of application and science at FIO + LS 2018

IBM research physical sciences director, Heike Riel, and Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science recipient, Gerard Mourou, to headline conference

The Optical Society

WASHINGTON - From the shortest time scales known in science, to the development of tomorrow's computing architectures, the Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science APS/DLS (FIO + LS) plenary presentations will detail recent achievements in nanoscale computing and ultrafast laser applications. The conference was thoughtfully revised in 2017, making it a broader meeting with trans-disciplinary content, fostering exchanges between academia and industry, and cross-pollination opportunities across fields. Presentations will be delivered throughout the week on the four conference research thrusts: Automotive, Nanophotonics and Plasmonics, Quantum Technologies and Virtual Reality and Augmented Vision.

Conference Plenary

As technology advances at an ever-increasing pace, the potential applications for optics continue to grow and bring us closer to the edge of amazing discovery and automation.

Dr. Heike E. Riel
IBM Research, Switzerland

Heike E. Riel, Ph.D., is the director of the Physical Sciences Department at IBM Research in Zurich, Switzerland. Her research interests include nanoscale materials and novel device concepts for applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and energy harvesting. In 2013, Dr. Riel became an IBM Fellow and a member for the IBM Academy of Technology. In 2003, Dr. Riel was named as one of the world's Top 100 Young Innovators by MIT Technology Review. Since then, she has gone on to receive the Applied Physics Award from the Swiss Physical Society and the Swiss Association of Women in Engineering Innovation Award.

Dr. Gérard Mourou
École Polytechnique, France

Gérard Mourou is a Professor Haut-Collége at the École Polytechnique and the A.D. Moore Distinguished University Emeritus Professor of the University of Michigan. This year, he was awarded the 2018 Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science. Mourou has made numerous contributions to the field of ultrafast lasers, high-speed electronics, and medicine. While at the University of Rochester, he developed with Donna Strickland the universally used laser amplification technique known as Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA). Mourou is member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and a foreign member of the Russian Science Academy, the Austrian Sciences Academy and the Lombardy Academy for Sciences and Letters.
