SAGE

Los Angeles, CA (June 14, 2018) SAGE Publishing is pleased to announce that eight SAGE authors will receive awards from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association (TAA) at their annual conference on Friday, June 15th. The only publisher that won in every award category, SAGE authors won the following:

  • Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches, fourth edition, by John Creswell and Cheryl N. Poth, received the McGuffey Longevity Award
  • Entrepreneurship by Heidi M. Neck, Christopher P. Neck, and Emma L. Murray, received the Most Promising New Textbook Award
  • Discover Sociology, third edition, by William J. Chambliss and Daina S. Eglitis, received the Textbook Excellence Award
  • Becoming an Academic Writer: 50 Exercises for Paced, Productive, and Powerful Writing, second edition, by Patricia Goodson, received the Textbook Excellence Award

"At SAGE Publishing, author partnerships and a commitment to quality content enhanced by easy-to-use technology are helping to strengthen student engagement and critical thinking," commented Michele Sordi, Senior Vice President and Head of US College at SAGE Publishing. "We believe that these award-winning titles attest to the impact of the author voice, evidence-based research, and innovative pedagogy. We congratulate our authors and the publishing teams that collaborated with them to produce these works."

TAA's Textbook Excellence Award ("Texty") recognizes excellence in current textbooks and learning materials, while the Most Promising New Textbook Award honors first edition works and the McGuffey Longevity Award recognizes in-demand textbooks and educational materials that have been in print for at least 15 years. All of the awards are granted based upon the works' pedagogy, content/scholarship, writing, and appearance and design. This year, TAA named 17 Texty awards, five Most Promising New Textbook awards and four McGuffey Longevity awards.

TAA will present the awards at their annual conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on June 15.

SAGE's authors noted both the validation of their peers and the home they found in SAGE in commenting on their wins.

"It is a huge honor ... especially because the award comes from a group of academic writers - the Textbook and Academic Authors Association!" said author Patricia Goodson. "This award indicates my peers see value in the book and, by granting the award, they validate its quality or stamp their approval."

Author Daina Eglitis said, "I was so delighted and honored to win the TAA award! Writing a textbook is hard work and it's nice to be recognized, but I think this award also recognizes the excellence of SAGE's staff, whose contributions to designing, editing, producing, and marketing Discover Sociology continue to be outstanding."

"Writing a textbook is unlike any other writing activity," commented author Heidi Neck. "It requires a very disciplined system with accountability to each other and the deadlines. Chris, Emma, and I each had our roles and these were determined at the start of the writing process. This was my first textbook but Chris and Emma worked on other texts, so their experience in creating the system was instrumental. Because of their system we never missed a deadline and published on time!"

Author John Creswell said, "With all of my new editions to my research books ... the question is, 'do I write another book?' I cannot answer this question right now ... [but] recognition gives me the incentive to continue writing more books, whether academic or literary in form ... the award just encourages me onward."

SAGE Publishing and TAA will also release a free collection of articles at the conference to support academic writers, titled "Write with Purpose, Publish for Impact." Written by research methodology expert Dr. Janet Salmons, the articles can be accessed on the online community site MethodSpace.

Remarks from the judges:

"Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design dependably reveals the research design path and provides navigational aids. No doubt it will continue to encourage more generations of researchers to embrace excellent qualitative research because of these attributes."

"Entrepreneurship: Practice and Mindset establishes a powerful approach to entrepreneurship with its twin focus on practice and mindset. This textbook effectively conveys the range of skills and knowledge that new entrepreneurs need to grasp, deftly illustrated with cases and other supporting materials."

"Discover Sociology is thought-provoking, using visual remediation of current events, which will promote critical thinking in students. It is brilliant, refreshing and captivating for millennials to relate to sociological theories.

"For its excellent breadth, depth, and clarity in de-mystifying the process of writing successful journal articles, Becoming an Academic Writer deserves to win..."
