Standfirst: Balkees Abderrahman and Federico Gulluni have been announced as winners of the Capturing Cancer Photography Competition.

Future Science Group (FSG) today announced the winners of the Capturing Cancer: Oncology Central Photography Competition. Balkees Abderrahman (University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, TX, USA) and Federico Gulluni (University of Torin, Italy) were chosen by the public vote and an expert judging panel, respectively.

The Capturing Cancer Photography Competition was created to provide an opportunity to all cancer researchers and clinicians to share their research using imagery; from images that can only be observed with the aid of a microscope to photos demonstrating key themes in clinical oncology.

Gulluni won for his image entitled 'Be aneuploid', which through immunofluorescence shows a cancer cell forming more than ten multiple spindles. Abderrahman won for her photo entitled 'A cancer scientist is female and male'.

"I am equally thrilled and honored to learn that hundreds chose my photograph to be the winner, which was taken at V. Craig Jordan's laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center. I wish to convey my gratitude for everyone for their votes that allowed this photograph on equal gender contribution in science and medicine, to be highlighted and given a moment," Abderrahman commented to Oncology Central.

"I thank everyone also for allowing a physician-scientist like myself to contradict the stereotype that physicians are bound to the clinic walls and scientists to Petri dishes, where in fact, we can weigh-in on the social issues that affect us, and be effective communicators even social change agents", Abderrahman added.

Gulluni and Abderrahman will be provided with the opportunity to showcase their work to the global oncology community through an exclusive interview on Oncology Central. Additionally, they will both receive a monetary prize and open access discounts for the next paper they publish in either Future Oncology or FSG's Oncology Management series of journals.

Jade Parker, Editor of Oncology Central, commented: "It has been a pleasure to host the Capturing Cancer competition - we've immensely enjoyed seeing examples of cancer research and clinical practice from across the globe, providing a snapshot of all the hard work going into tackling the disease. I look forward to celebrating our winners and showcasing their work on Oncology Central in the coming months."
