Researchers report that summer surface ozone levels in four megacity clusters in China increased during 2013-2017, after correcting for the effect of meteorological variability; reductions in fine particulate matter emissions appeared to largely underlie the increase, thereby slowing down the uptake of hydroperoxy radicals by aerosols and enhancing ozone production, suggesting the need to reduce anthropogenic ozone precursor emissions to overcome this effect.
