How mindfulness reduces loneliness

Peer-Reviewed Publication

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

A study of 153 adults who completed one of three two-week, smartphone-based stress management interventions that focused on awareness, coping control, or awareness and acceptance found that a combination of awareness and acceptance training--the core elements of mindfulness meditation--was the most successful of the three interventions for decreasing loneliness and increasing social interactions; the findings suggest that learning to accept present-moment experiences is a key component of mindfulness training that may change social behaviors and perceptions of loneliness.
