Paris, France, 24 May 2019. A total of 11,206 participants from over 120 different countries were present at the 30th edition of EuroPCR, the official meeting of the European Association for Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI). An additional 4,700 online learners connected to watch a selection of sessions that were made available both live and on replay via PCR Virtual Event on PCRonline.com.

The World-Leading Course in interventional cardiovascular medicine has just come to a close in Paris, after gathering members of the community from across the globe.

Five PCR Statements

During the four-day Course, five PCR Statements were made on key issues in which there are important new or controversial results:

  • EAPCI expert consensus on the clinical use of intracoronary imaging presented by T. Johnson
  • Clinical outcomes after interventions with paclitaxel drug coated balloons presented by A. Lansky
  • Percutaneous edge-to-edge repair in patients with heart failure and secondary mitral regurgitation presented by B. Prendergast
  • Defining high bleeding risk in patients undergoing PCI: a consensus from the Academic Research Consortium for high bleeding risk presented by P. Urban
  • Evolving indications for TAVI in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis presented by S. Windecker

Late-breaking Trials and Trial Updates sessions

New developments and the latest data from internationally recognised trials were released at EuroPCR 2019 during Hot Line and Late-breaking Trial sessions. Among these, the following were highly anticipated:

  • Mitral regurgitation after MitraClip implantation: relationship between residual mitral regurgitation and clinical and functional outcomes from the COAPT trial presented by S. Kar
  • GLOBAL Leaders substudy: ticagrelor monotherapy in complex PCI (multivessel, long lesions, bifurcation) presented by P.W. Serruys
  • Percutaneous edge-to-edge repair for tricuspid regurgitation: primary outcomes from the TRILUMINATE clinical trial presented by G. Nickenig

Numerous studies presented at EuroPCR have simultaneously been published in EuroIntervention Journal and several high Impact Factor journals, including European Heart Journal, Circulation, JAMA Cardiology and JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions.

Consensus documents

  • EAPCI expert consensus on the clinical use of intracoronary imaging presented by T. Johnson and published in European Heart Journal (https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehz332)
  • Defining high bleeding risk in patients undergoing PCI: a consensus from the Academic Research Consortium for high bleeding risk presented by P. Urban and published in European Heart Journal (Doi: 10.1093/eurheartj/ehz372) and Circulation (doi: 10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.119.040167)

Drugs and Devices Synergy / PCR Algorithm sessions

For the second year, dedicated sessions addressed drug selection, combination, timing of initiation, dosing and duration.

Four of these led to PCR algorithms which are available on PCRonline:

Use of technology for new educative tools

During the LIVE demonstrations, a new 'smart screen' in the Main Arena allowed facilitators to capture snapshots of live images upon which they could hand-draw illustrations or notes to emphasise certain learning points. This technique was also used for the highly practical new Learning LIVE sessions that focused on rotational atherectomy, fluoro-CT for coronary interventions, bifurcation and step-by-step MitraClip procedure in secondary mitral regurgitation. In the new Simulation Based Learning Area, small groups of participants were able to benefit from hands-on workshops using simulators and realistic models.

$200,000 USD grant for innovation

Following the presentation of six shortlisted presentations from the PCR Call for Innovations, Dr. R Schwartz of the Jon DeHaan Foundation presented an award of $200,000 USD to Giora Weisz, for the submission Filterlex: Captis full body embolic protection for TAVI. https://www.pcronline.com/Courses/PCR-Innovators-Day-Paris/Submissions/Grant-for-Interventional-Innovation

Andreas Grüntzig Ethica Award

The Andreas Grüntzig Ethica Award was presented to Professor Jean Marco in recognition of his contribution to education in interventional cardiology during a moving ceremony where he received a standing ovation from his peers. https://www.pcronline.com/Courses/EuroPCR/About/ethica-award-ceremony

From the opening ceremony of this 30th anniversary edition of EuroPCR and throughout, a strong emphasis was put on the importance of exchange between peers in a non-judgemental atmosphere, as companions. The Course managed to capture this spirit, encouraging all participants of the interventional community to share their knowledge, practice and experience. A new collaborative loyalty programme called PCR Companions was also launched in Paris and is open to all healthcare practitioners, free of charge. 1,800+ people have already signed up to the programme designed to build links within the community that go beyond education.
