Angela Salcedo, Saif Khan and Hui Chen win 2019 IADR STAR Network Fellowship

Angela Salcedo, Universidad Cientifica del Sur, Peru, Saif Khan, Aligarh Muslim University, India and Hui Chen, ShanDong University, China as the 2019 recipients of the IADR STAR Network Academy Fellowship. Salcedo, Khan and Chen were recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 97th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). The IADR/AADR/CADR General Session & Exhibition is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22, 2019.

Started in 2017, this Fellowship was developed for short-term visits to research laboratories associated with the IADR General Session. The purpose of the fellowship is to support the awardee's attendance at the IADR Academy and IADR General Session & Exhibition and then to have a research experience in a renowned research laboratory immediately before or after the IADR/AADR/CADR General Session. Salcedo, Khan and Chen received $5,000 USD for travel and accommodation to the IADR/AADR/CADR General Session and complimentary registration for the General Session and 7th IADR Academy: Quantitative Morphology: A Workshop on the Analysis of 3D Imaging Data.

Chen is a postdoctoral fellow at School of Stomatology, ShanDong University, China. His research interests include sleep disorders, especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in relation to race and upper airway morphology, in the pathogenesis of OSA and treatment outcomes of OSA. Chen will visit the Dental Sleep Apnea Clinical Research Team lab of Fernanda Almeida at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

Khan is an Assistant Professor in Periodontology at Aligarh Muslim University, India. Khan's research interests include salivary diagnostics in Diabetes Mellitus, periodontal medicine, oral and gingival mucosal lesions especially desquamative gingivitis, epithelial mutagenesis and chlorhexidine genotoxicity. Khan will be mentored by Hannu Larjava at the Laboratory of Periodontal Biology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

Salcedo is an Adjunct Professor and Instructor of Histology and Embryology for the School of Stomatology, Scientific University of the South, Lima, Peru. Her research interests include dental pulp biology, tissue regeneration and macro-anatomy, molecular and cell biology and dental genetics. Salcedo will be mentored by Joy Richman in the Developmental Biology lab at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
